The field of oxylipin research has outpaced the development of standards and guidelines. As these signaling lipids gain attention in inflammation, metabolism, and tissue repair, the field must confront a central challenge: many proposed pro-resolving mediators are difficult to measure and interpret. A recent publication by Schebb and colleagues calls for stronger evidence, from analytical detection to endogenous function.

FBiosynthesis and analytics of specialized pro-resolving mediators: facts and faults https://lipidomicssociety.org/2026/08/31/fbiosynthesis-and-analytics-of-specialized-pro-resolving-mediators-facts-and-faults/ Mon, 31 Aug 2026 20:39:35 +0000 https://lipidomicssociety.org/?p=9621 Abstract

Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) have been suggested to act as key factors that mediate the resolution of inflammation. With the availability of synthetic standards, pharmacological studies have garnered support for the hypothesis. However, assessment of the catalytic properties of lipoxygenases as well as investigations of the signalling of the proposed SPM receptors raise serious doubt that SPMs are endogenous mediators of the resolution of inflammation. In line with this, careful evaluation of published data on SPM detection revealed a lack of evidence for many reported SPMs in biological samples due to analytical LC-MS/MS methods that do not meet the quality standards of the scientific community, or they rely on ELISAs that lack selectivity and are not suited for the establishment of the presence of SPMs in complex biological samples. Furthermore, artefacts due to autoxidation of PUFAs can be misinterpreted as SPM formation. In this review, we critically assess the published reports on the biosynthesis and the analysis of SPMs and summarize the current status in the field.

ILS Board Statement on the Use of Society Funds for Travel Activities https://lipidomicssociety.org/2026/05/12/ils-board-statement-on-the-use-of-society-funds-for-travel-activities/ Tue, 12 May 2026 08:10:18 +0000 https://lipidomicssociety.org/?p=9177

The ILS Board has received questions regarding the use of society funds for travel activities by Board members. We would therefore like to provide clarification on the purpose and scope of these expenses.

As part of the society’s outreach and community-building efforts, the ILS President and Vice-President may use designated ILS funds to support participation in conferences where official ILS workshops are organized. The purpose of these activities is to increase the visibility of ILS, foster collaborations with related scientific communities, and support the development of new initiatives relevant to our members.

Examples of outcomes from these activities include:

  • the ILS workshop at ISPL 2024, which initiated collaboration with the plant science community and contributed to the establishment of a successful ring trial;
  • the ILS workshop at AOCS 2025, which led to the formation of the Food & Nutrition Interest Group and subsequent development of an additional ring trial initiative.

Importantly, ILS funds have not been used to support personal conference attendance or individual travel to ILS conferences, GRC meetings, or other scientific events outside official ILS workshop activities.

Approximately 15% of corporate membership contributions were allocated to travel activities associated with these official workshops. Individual membership fees have not been used for such travel expenses and will continue to be reserved for member-focused activities, including support for early-career researcher travel awards (currently €4,000 annually). In addition, the society maintains ongoing operational expenses related to server maintenance and infrastructure.

The ILS Board remains committed to responsible financial management, transparency, and the appropriate use of society resources. We greatly appreciate the continued engagement and support of our members and corporate partners as ILS continues to grow.

Exciting Update: LipidCascade Now Available https://lipidomicssociety.org/2026/04/01/exciting-update-lipidcascade-now-available/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 17:41:37 +0000 https://lipidomicssociety.org/?p=9040

We are pleased to announce that LipidCascade is now live and available to members of the International Lipidomics Society (ILS).

LipidCascade is a cloud-based platform designed to serve as a central database and visualization tool for quantitative lipidomics data. It is built to support the integration and comparison of datasets across studies, following the latest standardization guidelines.

The initial focus is to establish LipidCascade as the central repository for ILS ring-trial studies. Over time, the platform will support the accumulation of lipid concentration data toward the development of reference values, enabling robust multi-study comparisons and advancing harmonization efforts in the field.

Access for ILS Members

Access to LipidCascade is now available exclusively to ILS members. You can explore currently available datasets, including the Ceramide Ring Trial.
The platform can be accessed via the “Tools” section on the ILS main menu. To log in to LipidCascade, please select the SSO (Single Sign-On) option and use your ILS credentials.

Upcoming Events

To support the launch, a series of webinars and events are planned, including:

Future perspectives in mass spectrometry of plant lipids https://lipidomicssociety.org/2026/04/01/future-perspectives-in-mass-spectrometry-of-plant-lipids/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 07:30:30 +0000 https://lipidomicssociety.org/?p=9021 Abstract

Plant lipid research has seen a tremendous progress in the last decades, particularly in the area of lipid analytics by mass spectrometry. This includes the characterization of the different lipid classes involved in the establishment of the membrane bilayer, in carbon storage, and signaling. Advances in mass spectrometry have transformed the landscape of plant lipid research, enabling large scale studies of complex lipids at the level of individual molecular species, with minimal efforts of sample preparation. Lipidomic technologies employ targeted approaches to analyze known lipid molecular species as well as non-targeted methods to identify lipids that accumulate differentially in specific sample sets. Lipid quantification requires the availability of appropriate standards and highly sensitive methods of mass spectrometry. Additional technologies have been developed to study the spatial distribution of lipids in plant tissues, as well as to identify and characterize unusual lipids in plant cells. Finally, the large amounts of data generated in plant lipid research require sophisticated databases that connect the ‘omics’ data with data on growth, development, and adaptive responses to stress conditions at the tissue, cellular, and subcellular levels.

New Analytical Technologies to Resolve, Interpret, and Understand Lipid Complexity https://lipidomicssociety.org/2026/02/27/new-analytical-technologies-to-resolve-interpret-and-understand-lipid-complexity/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 08:54:15 +0000 https://lipidomicssociety.org/?p=8983 Abstract

The rapid and continued development of mass spectrometry–based technologies has significantly increased the capability to study and characterize lipids while providing new insight into the complex roles of lipids throughout biology. These capabilities have included the ability to quantify, structurally characterize (including resolving isomers that pose significant challenges to lipidomics), and spatially map lipids within numerous complex organisms, revealing new capabilities in emerging areas such as single-cell analysis. With these rapid developments, several challenges have emerged, such as accurate lipid identification, incorrect and overinterpretation of mass spectrometry data and structural assignments, and the need for improved analytical and bioinformatics tools to understand lipidomics data at the pathway and systems levels. This review critically assesses analytical technologies used for lipidomics studies, along with current challenges and technological developments driving the field forward. By highlighting these challenges, and possible avenues to address them, this review emphasizes the excitement for the future of lipidomics and the need for continued development of analytical tools to enhance our understanding lipid biology.

We note with great sadness the passing of Walt Shaw, founder of Avanti Polar Lipids.

Through the development of high-quality lipid standards, Walt Shaw laid the essential foundation that made the establishment of modern lipidomics possible.
His vision, support and commitment fundamentally shaped the field and enabled reproducible, quantitative lipid research worldwide.
His legacy will continue to live on in every lipidomics experiment built upon this work.

Our deepest condolences to the Shaw family.

With sympathy,
